Overcoming the Enemy Every Day

Scripture Focus:
Matthew 6:13; Ephesians 6:10–18; 1 Peter 5:8–11 (see full text below)

One of the most sobering realities of the Christian life is this: every believer has an enemy. Scripture makes it clear that the enemy’s agenda is destructive—he seeks to steal, kill, and destroy anything God is building in our lives. He does not have our best interests at heart, and he never rests in his efforts to oppose the work of God.

If we are not intentional and spiritually alert, it is easy to adopt a false perspective. Instead of recognizing the spiritual forces at work behind brokenness and chaos, we may begin to view people as the enemy. While people can oppose us, hurt us, abuse us, and cause very real pain, Scripture reminds us that the true battle is deeper than what we see.

The apostle Paul makes this unmistakably clear: “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers of this present darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” The conflict we experience is not merely relational or circumstantial—it is spiritual.

This understanding changes everything.

When we recognize that the enemy often operates behind the scenes of destruction and division, we begin to pray differently. Jesus taught us to ask daily, “Deliver us from evil.” This is not a fearful prayer; it is a faith-filled declaration of dependence on God’s protection and power.

There is no question about whether the enemy is scheming. The real question is whether we are willing to learn how to stand, resist, and fight spiritually. Scripture calls us to be sober-minded and watchful, to stand firm in our faith, and to put on the full armor of God so we can withstand the enemy’s attacks.

Daily prayer is not optional—it is essential. When we pray for God’s intervention, we are asking Him to frustrate the enemy’s plans, rebuke the devourer, and restore what has been stolen. God’s promise is not just resistance, but restoration. He strengthens, confirms, and establishes those who stand firm in Him.

Victory is not achieved by ignoring the battle; it is experienced by standing equipped, alert, and dependent on God. Through Christ, we are more than conquerors—and as we learn to rule spiritually, we can walk in daily victory and live the full life God intends.

Bible Verses:
Matthew 6:13 "and deliver us from evil"

Ephesians 6: 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

1 Peter 5: 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
