It’s Not What You Are, It’s Who You Are That Matters
1 Peter 2:9–10 (ESV)
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
One of the most common questions we ask when meeting someone for the first time is, “What do you do?” Careers, roles, and accomplishments often become the way we define ourselves—and over time, they can quietly become the source of our value. It’s easy to believe that who we are is determined by what we do.
But in the Kingdom of God, the order is completely different.
Scripture shows us that identity comes before activity. Who you are shapes your value, your purpose, and ultimately how you live. In 1 Peter 2, we see a powerful truth about our relationship with God: He chooses us. Not because of performance. Not because of achievement. But because He created us.
Even on the days when you don’t feel confident, worthy, or secure, God remains invested in you becoming everything He designed you to be.
Without a relationship with Christ, life can feel confusing—like holding an object and not knowing what it’s for. We ask questions, experiment, and guess. But when we discover the manufacturer and open the product manual, everything begins to make sense.
God is our Creator, and His Word is our guide. When we learn who made us and why we were made, we finally understand who we are meant to be.
Scripture reminds us that we are chosen, royal, holy, and God’s own possession. We have been called out of darkness and into His marvelous light—out of confusion and into clarity, out of bondage and into freedom, out of uncertainty and into purpose.
Holiness isn’t about striving to become someone new—it’s about living from the identity God has already given you. Fulfilling your purpose is made clear once you know WHOSE you are! Remember the shepherd boy David, who was pressured to wear Saul's armor? Fighting with a sword and armor wasn't in alignment with WHO he was at that time. Be You. Be who God has called you to be.
Don’t let what you do determine who you are. Let who you are in Christ determine how you live.
